Positive
Behaviour for Learning (PBL) at Ipswich West State School
The Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework at Ipswich West State School is designed to assist every student to experience social, behavioural and academic success. This is achieved through explicitly teaching the expected behaviours and rewarding students when they demonstrate the expected behaviours. PBL implements teaching and learning to support and develop student social and emotional wellbeing, through explicit skill practice. The PBL framework at Ipswich West State School adresses behaviour privately and individually, while celebrating student success publicly. At Ipswich West State School we are a respectful, responsible, resilient and safe community.
PBL is an organisational framework for student engagement. As a framework or approach, it is not a specific "model" or "program", but a compilation of research-validated and effective practices, interventions and systems change strategies. PBL provides the framework for:
- Improving the social behavioural climate of schools
- Supporting or enhancing the impact of academic instruction on achievement
- Increasing proactive, positive, preventative management while decreasing reactive management
- Integrating academic and behaviour supports
- Improving services for all students, including student at risk and student with identified disabilities
An important part of any PBL framework is ensuring it is student friendly and many schools achieve this through the use of a mascot. Willow and William Westie are the twin wombat mascots at Ipswich West State School. They represent, and are involved in all things positive at Ipswich West State School. William and Willow help to teach our students to be respectful, responsible, resilient and safe!
